Lake Champlain Duck Hunts
Whether you are looking for early season teal, woodies and ring-necked ducks, or late season giant black ducks and diver ducks from Canada, Champlain is the spot to hunt. This massive waterway (once officially deemed the 7th Great Lake) is the premiere duck factory for migrating waterfowl in the northeast. In fact, it is not uncommon to see in excess of 12 waterfowl species in one outing. Our hunts are typically 3 to 5 days in length and begin with your group flying into the Burlington, Vermont airport. Gear and hunters loaded into a rental car and a 30 minute drive north on Interstate 89 will land you at our base camp in St. Albans. Here you will stay at a Comfort Inn just 15 minutes from boat launches that we use to access rich freshwater marshes and rocky offshore islands in our pursuit of waterfol both for the table and the wall. Champlains bird density and diversity is not to be missed!!!
Equipment and Licenses
The majority of our Vermont waterfowl hunts are done over water and involve getting in and out of boats both at the launch and at blind sites and therefore we always recommend the use of waders. There is also a saying in Vermont, "If you don't like the weather, just wait a minute." This old addage points to the fact that heavy duty waterfowling jackets as well as multiple layers of polypropylene, wool, and fleece are also a must to ensure comfort on any given day. The other key peice of equipment, a shotgun capable of chambering 3 or 3 1/2 inch shells. Shot size for steel loads should be 1's, 2's, BBB's, or BB's while other nontoxic loads should be 2's or 4's. Licenses can be purchased online if you have previously possessed a VT hunting license or if you have never hunted Vermont, a license application and a state stamp form may be downloaded and sent to the Department of Fish and Game. To begin the licensing process visit Vermont's Fish and Wildlife website at www.vtfishandwildlife.com.
